Aged 50 or over? Drop in to our 50+ Still Gamers’ sessions for fun, fitness and friendship!

In October 2022, DTTC started a five-week trial of social table tennis for 50+ year olds. Such was the success, two years later there are forty players regularly participating, and we’ve extended to two mornings a week.

Sessions are from 11.00 – 13.00 on Mondays and Thursdays, and there is no need to book. Bats and balls are provided, just remember to bring non-marking shoes.

All abilities are welcome – we have attendees from complete beginners to league players. Some have played when they were young and have taken it up again. Ages range from 50 to some in their 80s. New players are immediately introduced and integrated with other players at a level they feel comfortable with. Still Gamers are a friendly crowd and are happy to play with anyone of any ability!

Members of the group supervise sessions and sign people in. New players are asked to complete a short registration form before they play. A first visit is free, thereafter it’s £4 a session or £3 for club members, and refreshments are free.

Format

Because it has been so successful, most of the 9 tables are taken up with doubles games. But tables  are usually available for singles when folk stop for coffee and Elaine’s legendary cakes! Occasionally we have special event days with fun games or competitions for those that want to participate.

Still Gamers’ sessions are primarily social table tennis, but we have a fortnightly 50+ coaching group after the Thursday session for those that wish to improve.

Those who want to challenge themselves against younger or more experienced players can join the Dumfries Table Tennis League, and there are several Still Gamers teams in the different divisions.

Staying healthy

Table tennis is a great activity for improving fitness and flexibility levels (even if only from picking up balls as you learn!) It’s also great for improving mental health and agility – though as none of us are good at keeping the score we often resort to “let’s call it 6-all”!

Some of our players have limited mobility or are in a wheelchair,  but have good game strategies and skills. The Still Gamers’ session has included people with dementia, and Parkinson’s, and a separate Parkinson’s table tennis group plays fortnightly on Tuesday afternoons. We try to ensure at least one person present has current First Aid training, and the club has a defibrillator in case of emergencies.

So do come and join us, or if you’ve any questions, just email info@dumfriesttc.co.uk.
